Larnaca, Cyprus. Customs and police officers intercepted 24 kilograms of cannabis-based and synthetic cannabinoid products in two packages that arrived at Larnaca airport, the Customs Department said on Sunday. Two people were arrested following an investigation.
Package inspection
The packages arrived from another European Union member state and were labelled as souvenirs. The Customs Department said the sender and recipient were considered suspicious.
An inspection found 1,600 items, including tea, coffee, chewing gum, jelly, cigarette filters, electronic cigarettes and roll-up cigarettes. The products contained cannabis or other cannabinoid-like synthetic chemicals, according to the department.
Arrests and investigation
Police subsequently identified a 31-year-old man as the alleged intended recipient of the packages and arrested him along with a 23-year-old woman employed at premises in Cyprus where the products were believed to have been intended for sale.
A search of the premises found additional quantities of cannabinoid products, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
