Two arrested on British Dhekelia base over alleged theft of bus parts worth €10,000

Ormidia, Cyprus. Two men have been arrested on the British Dhekelia base after allegedly stealing around €10,000 worth of parts from decommissioned buses, the British bases’ police said on Friday.

Arrest and alleged theft

The men were apprehended in the village of Ormidia on February 3, after police said they were found outside a fenced-off area where decommissioned buses were kept. Police said the pair were found in possession of stolen parts that had been loaded into their vehicle and were intended to be sold.

Additional allegations

Police said the men were also found to be in possession of a small amount of drugs, believed to be for personal use.

Police statement and court date

Temporary superintendent Marcos Petrou said stealing scrap metal is an issue and that the value of the goods in this case was significant. He said the case is being taken seriously and that the men will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, adding that such cases send a strong message that police will enforce the law when necessary. The pair are due to appear in court on March 3.
