Two buildings collapse in Istanbul’s Fatih district; five rescued from rubble

Konstantinoupoli Katarrefsi Mak1

Istanbul, Turkey. Two buildings collapsed in Istanbul’s Fatih district on Sunday, prompting a major rescue operation in the Ayvansaray area. Early reports cited a possible natural gas explosion, though the cause had not been officially confirmed.

Collapse in Ayvansaray

The collapse occurred around midday on Ebe Street in Ayvansaray, according to the Istanbul governor’s office. Initial assessments suggested a natural gas explosion may have brought the buildings down, and authorities were also examining whether a landslide could have played a role.

Rescue operation and casualties

Five people were believed to have been trapped under the rubble. All five were later pulled out and taken to hospital, though their condition was not immediately known. Earlier reports had said three people had been rescued, with two still trapped before the operation continued.

Emergency response at the scene

Large numbers of rescue workers, firefighters and ambulances were dispatched to the site, and residents also joined efforts to clear debris and search for survivors. Video and photographs from the area showed crowds gathered behind a police cordon as teams worked through the wreckage with specialist equipment.

Investigation and uncertainty

The number of people inside the buildings at the moment of collapse was not immediately clear. Reports said the structures appeared old and rundown, and authorities were examining that factor as part of their assessment.
