Two dead after wildfire destroys house in northern Greece

Wildfire Burns Near The Village Of Liti

Thessaloniki, Greece. Two people died after a wildfire destroyed a house in a forested settlement in northern Greece, according to the fire brigade. A woman with burns was rescued from the same area after authorities ordered residents to evacuate.

Fire spreads from bushland

The fire broke out in bushland on Tuesday afternoon and spread quickly due to strong winds. Local media reported that the flames engulfed the house near the village of Liti, about 25 km from Thessaloniki.

Victims found during firefighting operation

The fire brigade said firefighters found a dead man nearby while extinguishing the blaze and discovered a second body inside the house.

Evacuation ordered for residents

Authorities told residents to leave the settlement and move to a nearby playing field.

Wildfire risk in the Mediterranean

Greece and other Mediterranean countries are considered wildfire hotspots by scientists because of a fast-warming climate, with fires becoming more destructive during hot and dry summers.
