The fire in Choletria, Paphos

Choletria, Cyprus. Two homes were saved after firefighters brought a wildfire under control near the community in Paphos district on Wednesday afternoon. No injuries or damage to homes have been reported.

Fire response

Choletria community president Haris Pazaros told the Cyprus News Agency that the fire broke out in the Souskiou area, between Asprokremos and Choletria.

The blaze started at around 1pm and burned low vegetation and trees. Ground crews were supported by Forestry Department aircraft.

Wind conditions

Strong winds during the early stages of the fire complicated firefighting efforts and increased the risk of the blaze spreading.

Firefighters, forestry personnel and aerial resources worked together to contain the fire before it reached nearby properties. Crews remained in the area to fully extinguish it and prevent flare-ups.

Investigation pending

The full extent of the burned area remains under assessment. The cause of the fire has not been established and an investigation will be conducted when conditions are safe.

Authorities advised the public to avoid the area and urged residents to exercise caution during the high fire-risk period.
