Kyiv, Ukraine. Ukraine’s armed forces are introducing mobile groups deploying interceptor drones as part of a new air defence approach, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said. He warned of anticipated new mass Russian attacks.

New air defence approach

Zelenskiy said the Air Force would adopt “a new approach” to air defence involving mobile fire groups, interceptor drones and other short-range air defence assets. He announced the appointment of Pavlo Yelizarov as a new deputy Air Force Commander to oversee and develop the initiative.

Impact of recent strikes

Ukraine is still dealing with the effects of a wave of Russian strikes earlier this month that knocked out power and heating to thousands of apartment blocks, particularly in the capital, Kyiv. Zelenskiy has repeatedly called for strengthening air defences, including increased assistance from Ukraine’s Western allies.

Warnings of further attacks

In his nightly video address, Zelenskiy urged Ukrainians to be “extremely vigilant,” saying Russia had prepared for a massive strike and was waiting for the moment to carry it out. He called on every region to be ready to respond quickly and assist people.

Zelenskiy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said at the weekend that Ukrainian intelligence had noted Russia conducting reconnaissance of specific targets, particularly substations that supply nuclear power plants.

Government decisions on recovery measures

Zelenskiy said he instructed Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to make decisions this week related to difficulties from the recent attacks, including bonuses for tens of thousands of emergency crew members restoring heating and electricity.
