Nicosia, Cyprus. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to arrive in Cyprus on Monday evening to encourage progress towards renewed negotiations on a Cyprus settlement, UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin said.
Holguin spoke after meeting President Nikos Christodoulides and said her meetings with him and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman were intended to prepare for the secretary-general’s visit.
Preparations for visit
Holguin said Guterres’ visit aimed to encourage the island’s people and leaders to proceed with negotiations that could lead to a settlement.
She said the UN chief had supported efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem for almost 10 years and expressed hope that progress could be made.

Holguin said she had previously visited Brussels and Ankara, where she held meetings and discussed issues that needed to move forward to support progress.
