Brussels, Belgium. United Nations envoy Maria Angela Holguin will meet the European Commission’s newly appointed envoy for the Cyprus problem, Raffaele Fitto, on Wednesday.

The meeting comes as diplomatic activity aimed at resuming negotiations on the Cyprus problem intensifies.

EU support for UN efforts

Holguin’s meeting with Fitto follows a telephone call with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Tuesday.

Following the call, Kallas reaffirmed the European Union’s support for UN efforts to achieve a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

“The EU remains firmly committed to supporting the UN led efforts for Cyprus,” Kallas said.

Upcoming UN visit

Holguin’s visit to Brussels takes place one week before UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is due to visit Cyprus.
