New York, United States. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that a new enlarged meeting on the Cyprus problem will be convened after adequate progress is made on confidence-building measures, the meeting’s methodology and the substance of talks.
He made the announcement after a tripartite meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.
Preparation required
Guterres did not provide a deadline for the proposed meeting. He said there was consensus among the two sides and the island’s three guarantor powers — Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom — that such a meeting should take place.
He said the United Nations did not want another enlarged meeting to end without result and reiterated the need for adequate preparation before it is held.
