Unauthorized hay-cutting attempt reported in UN buffer zone near Avlona

Avlona, Cyprus. An incident of unauthorised activity was reported on Sunday morning in the Avlona area after a landowner allegedly attempted to cut hay in the UN-controlled buffer zone without permits. United Nations forces intervened and removed the man from the area.


Incident in the buffer zone

The incident occurred at around 11am, when the man was seen using a tractor and mowing equipment in the area.

Land ownership and UN restrictions

Avlona community leader Menelaos Savva said the individual owns the specific plots of land involved. Savva said the area has been designated as “frozen” by the United Nations, meaning that no permits are granted for agricultural or other activities, including to lawful landowners.

Savva said the individual appeared to have taken advantage of the situation and that similar actions have been reported in the past. He added that United Nations forces intervened promptly and removed the man from the area.
