Larnaca, Cyprus. Trade unions Peo and Sek said on Friday that agreements reached with the ports authority in December to improve working conditions at the port of Larnaca have led to notable improvements, with further measures underway.

The unions said the changes follow an agreement signed before Christmas and discussions held during a joint tour of the port and a meeting with the ports authority’s management.

Improvements reported by unions

Peo representative Nadia Kyritsi told the Cyprus News Agency that hygiene conditions in restrooms have improved, cleaning has begun, and improvements to weighing stations are underway. She said the names of members of the safety and health committee across all involved working sectors at the port have been provided, and bids have been issued for additional services for the piers.

Sek representative Charalambos Avgousti said several measures have started and are being implemented within the first three weeks, adding that the majority of issues have been resolved and that remaining problems are expected to be addressed shortly.

Upcoming meetings and reviews

The unions said the port workers’ safety committee is set to convene in early February. They also said a further meeting with the ports authority to review the situation and discuss additional measures has been scheduled for March 3.

Kyritsi said the unions would remain vigilant and aim to avoid a repeat of previous conditions.

Background to the agreement

Larnaca port workers went on strike in December to protest poor working conditions and insufficient safety measures. They demanded clean drinking water, clean hygiene facilities, and a safe working environment without potholes or exposed wires.
