Unops chief thanks Cyprus as Amalthea aid shipments to Gaza reach hundreds of tonnes

Nicosia, Cyprus. Unops executive director Jorge Moreira da Silva on Tuesday thanked Cyprus for providing its latest shipment of humanitarian aid to Gaza under the Amalthea plan. He said 400 tonnes of aid had been delivered, including mattresses and incubators for paediatric wards.

Latest delivery and contents

Moreira da Silva confirmed that a total of 400 tonnes of humanitarian aid had been delivered. He said the shipment included urgently needed mattresses and incubators for paediatric wards in Gaza medical facilities.

Foreign minister’s announcement

His comments followed an announcement last week by Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos that a shipment of 900 tonnes of humanitarian aid had been delivered to Gaza. Kombos said it comprised medical equipment, including neonatal incubators, hygiene items, shelter equipment, and food shelters.

Coordination and partners

Kombos said the shipment was carried out in coordination with Unops, with the assistance of the UN development programme, the World Health Organisation, and the governments of both France and the United Arab Emirates.

Cyprus’ stated role and previous figures

Kombos said Cyprus would continue to function as a pillar of stability in the region, contributing through actions and initiatives to regional peace and security. He said in January that more than 30,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid have been delivered to Gaza from Cyprus since the creation of the Amalthea corridor in 2024.
