Vafeades says transport infrastructure is a cornerstone of Europe’s security and sovereignty

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades

Nicosia, Cyprus. Transport infrastructure is no longer neutral but a cornerstone of Europe’s security, resilience and sovereignty, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades said on Wednesday. He said Europe’s ability to act in crises will depend on decisions made now.

Transport’s shifting strategic role

Addressing an informal meeting of EU transport ministers in Nicosia, Vafeades said Europe was at a defining moment as the geopolitical landscape shifts rapidly. He said transport, once primarily an economic policy domain, has become a matter of strategic importance.

Focus on rail and ports

Vafeades said discussions at the informal meeting would focus on two pillars, rail and ports, describing both as essential to Europe’s capacity to remain connected, competitive and secure.

Geopolitical pressures and coordination

Referring to a videoconference held last week on the impact of recent geopolitical developments on the transport sector, Vafeades said ministers shared an understanding that there were no immediate fuel shortages. He said the situation was placing significant pressure on transport systems across the EU, particularly aviation, maritime and road transport.

He said ministers converged on the need for enhanced coordination at EU level to avoid fragmentation of the Single Market, safeguard connectivity and ensure a balanced response combining short-term measures with longer-term objectives, including decarbonisation and reduced dependency on fossil fuels.

Commission initiative and longer-term resilience

Vafeades welcomed the Commission’s AccelerateEU initiative, citing monitoring mechanisms, targeted flexibility and support for the transition towards more sustainable energy and transport systems. He said Wednesday’s discussion would allow a move from immediate response to longer-term resilience.
