Brussels, Belgium. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said President Nikos Christodoulides has handled the situation effectively amid mounting tensions in the Middle East, adding that the European Union stands firmly with Cyprus on security matters.

EU position on Cyprus security

“The security of Cyprus is the security of the European Union,” von der Leyen said at a press conference with European Council President Antonio Costa following Thursday’s summit in Brussels.

Impact of the Iran war

Von der Leyen said Cyprus had been affected by the Iran war “more than any other member state” and commended Christodoulides’ leadership, saying normality and security now prevail in Cyprus.

Regional partnerships and unity

Von der Leyen said the EU has strengthened partnerships with neighbors in the region and stressed European unity, adding that Europeans are stronger when acting together.
