Wildfire in Trachoni prompts large-scale firefighting response in Limassol

Limassol, Cyprus. Firefighting forces were mobilised on Saturday afternoon after a wildfire broke out in the Trachoni area of Limassol district. The response involved civil defence, organised volunteer groups and personnel from the British bases.


Fire breaks out in Trachoni area

In a post on X, fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis said the fire was burning through dry grass and wild vegetation in the Trachoni area of Limassol district.

Emergency response deployed

Kettis said firefighting forces from Limassol district were dispatched to the scene. He added that Civil Defence and organised volunteer groups had also been activated.

Additional support provided

According to Kettis, firefighting efforts were being supported by a fire engine from the British bases, two excavators and a portable firefighting unit provided by Kourion municipality.

Possible cause under examination

Kettis said initial indications suggested the fire may have been caused after a lorry came into contact with overhead electricity cables belonging to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC).

Firefighting efforts continue

Efforts to bring the blaze under control were continuing on Saturday afternoon.
