Nicosia, Cyprus. A woman who received social benefits over a two-year period has reportedly been told to repay more than €11,000 in government support. The repayment followed findings that she had not properly disclosed information affecting her eligibility for the assistance.
Benefits suspended after welfare review
According to Phileleftheros, the woman had been receiving minimum guaranteed income since 2016. The payment was suspended after authorities learned that she had been cohabiting with her partner and had not rightfully disclosed information regarding her marital status, which affected her entitlement to social benefits.
Department cited engagement and employment
The newspaper reported that the social welfare department received information that the woman was engaged to an employed person and had also been working illegally. This prompted the department to suspend further benefits in 2018.
Repayment notice issued in 2020
In a separate letter dated October 2020, the department informed the woman that she was required to repay €11,040 in social benefits received as minimum guaranteed income between December 2016 and October 2018.
Appeal dismissed
After the suspension of the government support, the woman reportedly filed a case with the administrative court, which dismissed her appeal.
