Vouliagmeni, Greece. An 82-year-old man died after an altercation with a 76-year-old over the use of sunbeds at a beach on Sunday, according to Greek media reports.

The 82-year-old was taken to a hospital in Voula, where he died. The 76-year-old was taken in for questioning.

Accounts of the dispute

According to Sigmalive and Greek media, the 76-year-old said the 82-year-old had placed personal belongings on several chairs and sunbeds.

The 76-year-old said he and a young woman in his group attempted to take some of the sunbeds, leading to the altercation. He alleged that the 82-year-old first attacked the woman and then turned on him.

“It was a bad moment […] He had five or six chairs and five or six sunbeds […] I went to get some sunbeds with the woman I was with and he said, ‘Leave them’ […] and then got up and hit her,” the 76-year-old said.

Statement by the 76-year-old

The 76-year-old said the other man punched him in the jaw after he confronted him over allegedly hitting the woman.

“I said, ‘You coward, hitting women’ […] Then he punched me in the jaw. My jaw is now crooked. I fell to the ground, I was dizzy, I got up. After that, I remember nothing,” he said.

He said people gathered at the scene and tensions were high. He also said the young woman was disabled and suffered a fit.

A friend of the 76-year-old, who said he did not witness the incident, claimed that the 82-year-old had assaulted the group and that the woman sustained a facial injury. The friend also alleged that the man said: “Do you know who I am? I’m from the Navy.”
