Neophytou, who has been serving as dean of the university’s school of engineering, spoke after the results were announced on Wednesday afternoon.
“We start together for the day after,” she said.
Of the 486 eligible voters, 437 voted and 432 ballots were valid. The electorate comprised 348 academic staff, 117 members of student organisations and 21 administrative staff.
Five candidates contested the rector’s position for the first time. There was one candidate in 2022 and four in 2018.
Vice-rector elections
Following the rector election, voting began for the vice-rector posts for international relations and academic affairs.
Georgia Panayiotou is the sole candidate for vice-rector of academic affairs and needs 50 per cent plus one of the votes to be elected. Antonis Ellinas and Marios Dikeakos are contesting the international relations post.
Current rector’s term
Current rector Tasos Christofides will complete his second term in December 2026 and is not eligible to run again.
