Limassol, Cyprus. More than 250 participants will gather at the Four Seasons hotel on Tuesday for the inaugural Forbes Cyprus Next Generation Banking & Fintech Summit. Discussions will consider the outlook for banking, artificial intelligence and financial technology in Cyprus.

Cyprus’ role in international finance

The summit will consider ways to reinforce Cyprus’ standing as a centre for international financial services as technology advances and regulatory requirements evolve.

President Nikos Christodoulides is expected to deliver an address. Participants will include officials from government, regulatory authorities, bank executives, fintech businesses, investors and specialists in technology.

Speakers from abroad and industry representatives will attend from the US, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Europe and the Middle East.

Competitiveness and artificial intelligence

Four discussions form the core of the programme, addressing financial sector competitiveness in Cyprus, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure for finance and cybersecurity.

How a Small Island Wins, the opening session, will consider ways for Cyprus to draw investment and international finance businesses while operating with a relatively small domestic market. Topics will include regulatory conditions, infrastructure, the availability of skilled workers and fields in which Cyprus could gain a competitive edge.

The session titled AI and the Reinvention of Mainstream Banking will examine applications of artificial intelligence across customer service, the management of risk, data processing and efforts to prevent fraud. It will also address oversight, security and the responsible introduction of the technology.

Digital finance and payments

The third session, New Finance / Stack, will cover digital assets, systems for payments and infrastructure supporting finance. It will also consider scope for traditional banks to collaborate with fintech businesses.

Payments will receive particular attention, following Markides’ identification of the area as a possible driver of growth in Cyprus.
