Greece to set up ministerial committee to examine small nuclear reactors, Mitsotakis says

Paris, France. Greece will set up a ministerial committee to examine the development of small nuclear reactors and their potential role in the country’s energy mix, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a conference on nuclear power in Paris, Mitsotakis said Greece would explore whether nuclear power, and especially small nuclear reactors, could play a role in the Greek power system.

Current power generation mix

Greece largely relies on renewables, including wind and solar, and imported gas for power generation, as it moves toward shutting its last remaining lignite plants by 2028.

Rationale for exploring nuclear power

Mitsotakis said electricity demand is expected to grow and that, alongside expanding renewables, Greece would need long-term, predictable baseload power, which he said nuclear technology can provide.

Committee mandate

Mitsotakis said a top-level ministerial committee would be established to make recommendations on the issue.
