Yellow warning issued as inland Cyprus temperatures set to reach 40C

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’s Meteorological Service has issued a yellow warning for extremely high temperatures, with inland areas expected to reach 40C. The warning will be in force from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday.

Saturday forecast

Seasonal low pressure is affecting the region, with mainly clear conditions forecast during the day.

Low cloud and patches of mist or fog are expected initially inland and in southern and eastern areas. Clouds developing in the afternoon may bring isolated rain in the mountains.

Winds will blow mainly from the southwest to northwest, initially light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort and later strengthening to moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be slight, becoming locally moderate during the afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to rise to 40C inland, around 33C on the western and northern coasts, around 36C elsewhere along the coast and 30C in the higher mountains.

Night-time conditions

Tonight will be mainly clear, though low cloud is expected to increase at times in western areas. Patches of mist or fog may form towards dawn, mainly in the southeast and inland.

Winds will gradually become light downslope winds at around 3 Beaufort, while the sea will remain slight. Temperatures are forecast to fall to around 24C inland and along the coast, and to 20C in the higher mountains.

Outlook

Mainly clear weather is forecast for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, with temporarily increased cloud expected during the afternoons, particularly over the mountains.
