Nicosia, Cyprus. Cameroonian professional footballer Charles Eloundou, 31, is being held at Limnes detention centre and faces a deportation hearing on September 22, despite reportedly being a key prosecution witness in a criminal case concerning alleged fraud involving directors of his former club.

His residence permit expired after he left second-tier side Spartakos Kitiou at the end of last season.

Residence permit application

Eloundou has agreed to join fellow second-tier club Asil Lysi. Footballers’ association chairman Spiros Neofitides told Phileleftheros that renewing his residence permit should be “a formality”, particularly because his wife is a French national.

Spouses of European Union nationals generally have a smoother route to obtaining residence permits than other third-country nationals. Neofitides said the application to renew Eloundou’s permit was submitted “eight months ago”.

Criminal case

Neofitides said Eloundou’s testimony is important in a case concerning possible serial forgery involving professional football players.

“The second serious aspect of the whole matter has to do with the fact that Eloundou will testify in a very serious case concerning possible serial forgery against professional football players. Eloundou is a key witness for the prosecution and if he does not testify under oath in court, then the administration of justice will not be served,” he said.

The case concerns three directors of Achyronas-Onisilos, who were relegated to the third tier last season. The men, aged 58, 57 and 44, are alleged to have submitted forged contracts to the Cyprus Football Association without the players’ knowledge.

The three were first arrested in February last year, when Eloundou was still with the club.

Playing career

Eloundou played for Achyronas-Onisilos between 2024 and 2025 and has spent most of his career in Cyprus and the United States.

In Cyprus, he has also represented Nea Salamina, Anorthosis, Ethnikos Achna, Achyronas-Onisilos and Spartakos Kitiou. He won the 2020 Cypriot Cup with Anorthosis and had a brief loan spell at Ethnikos Achna.

In the United States, he played for Major League Soccer club Colorado Rapids and lower-league sides Charlotte Independence, Colorado Springs Switchbacks and Jacksonville Armada.
