Limassol, Cyprus. Rialto Theatre will return in September following its annual August break, opening its new artistic season with a programme including digital art, cinema, theatre, dance and literature.

Digital art installation

LUX_KILL, a brutalist choreographic intervention by Suzana Phialas, will take place in the underbelly of the Rialto Theatre on September 4, 5 and 6.

The installation guides visitors from the theatre’s traditional viewing space into an understage corridor. Across three dismantled monitors, Deconstructing an Algorithmic Body reacts to visitors’ presence, with their physical mass overloading the local network and triggering real-time visual distortions and frame-rate collapses.

The installation will be open from 7pm to 10pm on September 4 and from 6pm on September 5 and 6.

Film screenings and discussion

The theatre will also launch EXPLICIT, a new initiative intended to revisit and critically reflect on films that have challenged, enraged, intrigued, shocked and inspired audiences.

Its inaugural edition will focus on the work of Lars von Trier. In collaboration with Limassol Cine Club, screenings will be held on September 7, 8 and 9, accompanied by a discussion with film professionals on consent, violence and artistic freedom.

The programme includes Breaking the Waves, Antichrist, Nymphomaniac, Dancer in the Dark and The House that Jack Built. Screenings will have Greek and English subtitles.

Novel adapted for the stage

Louiza Papaloizou’s award-winning novel To Vouni will be brought to the stage in an adaptation directed by Maria Kyriakou.

The production follows the world of Xenis, the daughter and the Swede, in a poetic setting where memory, loss and the search for identity intersect.
