Nicosia, Cyprus. The Nicosia district government on Tuesday signed a €257,699 contract with Thessaloniki water supply and sewerage company Eyath for expertise in geographic information systems. The agreement will remain in force for 38 months.

Digital infrastructure and training

A geographic information system combines computer hardware and software to store, manage, analyse, edit, output and visualise geographic data.

Under the contract, Eyath will assist in creating a single geospatial database, developing geographic information system infrastructure and training staff in Nicosia. The company will also provide expertise in network management, customer service and the optimisation of business practices.

Officials’ statements

Nicosia district governor Constantinos Yiorkadjis said digital transformation would enable the district government to better manage infrastructure, make faster and more informed decisions, and respond effectively to people’s needs.

He said the collaboration with Eyath would draw on significant experience and expertise to create modern infrastructure for managing networks.

Eyath chief executive officer Anthimos Amanatidis described the agreement as cooperation on a mutual basis. He said Eyath could support the Nicosia district government in some areas while looking to Nicosia’s technology in others, following Eyath’s expansion to cover an entire region.

Amanatidis said he was confident the cooperation would flourish and expand into other areas in the coming years.

Eyath expansion in Greece

Greece’s parliament last month passed a law expanding Eyath’s responsibilities and geographical coverage from the city of Thessaloniki to the whole Thessaloniki regional unit and neighbouring Chalkidiki.

The Thessaloniki regional unit extends from the Delta municipality, which includes towns in the Axios river delta, in the west to Lagkadas in the north and Lake Volvi in the east.

The law also expands Eyath’s scope to include irrigation and management of the region’s rainwater network. It extends the company’s exclusive rights to provide water and sewerage services in Thessaloniki and Chalkidiki until 2038.
