Larnaca, Cyprus. Police are investigating a case of negligent and reckless acts after two men, aged 32 and 38, were injured in a fire during vehicle refuelling at a petrol station in Larnaca district on August 28, 2026.

The 38-year-old was arrested under a court warrant at Larnaca Airport on August 29, while the Kofinou Regional Police Station continues its investigation.


Fire during refuelling

According to information under investigation, the two men arrived at the petrol station at about 11.45pm on August 28 in the 32-year-old’s vehicle to refuel.

While the 38-year-old was near the fuel pump, he allegedly lit a lighter, causing an ignition and fire. Nearby residents extinguished the blaze using a fire extinguisher.

The fire damaged the 32-year-old’s vehicle and the fuel pump. Police and Fire Service officers attended the scene, along with an ambulance crew.

Injuries and arrest

Both men were taken to Larnaca General Hospital. The 32-year-old sustained a superficial burn to his left hand and was discharged after treatment.

The 38-year-old sustained second- and third-degree burns to his legs and right hand. He was transferred to Nicosia General Hospital but was discharged at his own request on the morning of August 29.

At about 3.30pm that day, the 38-year-old went to Larnaca Airport intending to travel to the country where he permanently resides. Police arrested him at the airport under a court warrant issued in connection with the investigation.
