Nicosia, Cyprus. Businessman Dimis Mavropoulos died after his boat was swept onto rocks by waves in the Agioi Anargyroi area of Cape Greco, while five people were rescued during an operation conducted in adverse weather conditions.

His daughter, Angela Mavropoulou, and his partner were among those rescued by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.


Rescue operation

The 76-year-old businessman fell into the sea after the boat was driven onto the rocks and broke apart.

Helicopters and rescue personnel were deployed to locate and recover people in the water. Five people were rescued in total.

Daughter discharged from hospital

Mavropoulou, who had also been aboard the boat, was discharged from Famagusta General Hospital on Saturday evening. Mavropoulos’s partner was discharged the following day.

In comments to Philenews, Mavropoulou said the family wanted privacy following the incident.

“I’m alive. We’ve been through a lot, and right now the whole family wants privacy,” she said.

She said she was in good health and had not sustained injuries, declining to comment further.
