Tehran, Iran. Iran said 18 people were killed and 108 wounded in U.S. strikes on Tuesday night, including four deaths and dozens of injuries at a wedding near the Strait of Hormuz.

Wedding strike and regional attacks

Iran’s health minister reported that 18 people were killed and 108 wounded in strikes across the country. The Iranian Red Crescent said four people were killed and 67 wounded at a wedding ceremony near the coast of the Strait of Hormuz.

The renewed combat operations have raised concern across the region. Iran launched missile and drone attacks against what it described as U.S. assets in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait and Iraq.

Kuwait’s army reported further missile and drone attacks early on Thursday, saying its air defence systems intercepted them.

Diplomatic and political pressure

The fighting had largely subsided after the previous exchange in July, although peace talks did not make progress.

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened further military action despite the war’s unpopularity in the United States and its effect on gasoline costs.

Four people familiar with the discussions said senior Trump aides were seeking to prevent an escalation before November’s midterm elections to limit Republican electoral losses. White House officials will consider increasing military action after the November 3 vote, they said.

Iran has remained defiant despite heavy military and economic losses.

UN calls for halt

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was “deeply alarmed by reports of civilian casualties, including a strike that reportedly hit a wedding ceremony in Iran,” spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

Guterres called for an immediate cessation of military action and condemned all attacks against civilians, Dujarric said.

“The Secretary-General condemns all attacks against civilians. He recalls that all parties must respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution,” Dujarric said.

The reported deaths would add to 3,636 people documented as killed in Iran as of April 7, including 1,701 civilians, according to the independent Iranian rights group Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).

The United States has reported 18 military personnel killed and more than 750 wounded.
