During the last year, the archeological excavations under the direction of professor Maria Iakovou were carried out in Paphos (Kouklia region).

After the project has finished, the Department of Historical items announced the discovery of the man-made Laon mountain and administrative fortress dated 6th century B.C. The stone complex with length of 65 metres was functioning as the centre of control for the royal family in the city of Paphos up until the end of 4th century B.C.

It is worth to note that during the excavations, a thick layer of crushed mourex shells was found, which are known as Venus’ crest. This confirms the production of expensive purple paint in Cyprus during that period.
