Nicosia, Cyprus. The Cypriot government on Monday postponed a planned meeting of the European general affairs council (Gac) in Nicosia after a drone struck the island’s British Akrotiri air force base shortly after midnight.
Postponed council meeting
The meeting was due to take place in Nicosia as Cyprus currently holds the Council of the European Union’s rotating presidency. Ministers had been expected to discuss, among other things, the EU’s multiannual financial framework, its budget for 2028 to 2034.
Planned participation and agenda items
The meeting had been planned to include ministers from some EU candidate countries and from the United Kingdom. UK representatives had been expected to attend a discussion on countering foreign information manipulation and interference under the planned “European democracy shield”.
No new date and other events this week
No date has been set for the meeting to take place. No information has been provided regarding other planned events in Nicosia this week, including an interparliamentary conference on the EU’s common security and defence policy and an informal meeting of EU member states’ culture ministers.
How will the postponement affect the schedule of EU presidency events planned in Nicosia this week?
