Nicosia, Cyprus. The redevelopment of Trikoupi street as a creative business neighbourhood has been inaugurated in Nicosia, as authorities promote the project as part of a broader renewal of the historic city centre. Access to the area remains affected by ongoing works at Oxi roundabout and nearby parking areas.

New closures announced

The municipality announced on Wednesday that Oxi roundabout, located at the top of Trikoupi street, will be closed from Thursday until December. Carparks in the moat of the Venetian walls will also be closed, prompting concern from residents and shop owners over further disruption.

Project scope and funding

The Trikoupi street project is funded through the Thalia 2021-2027 EU programme at a cost of €5.4 million. Efforts are being made to complete the works before the end of 2027.

Part of wider city-centre works

Other parts of central Nicosia are also under renovation, including roads off Makarios III avenue, which continues from Limassol avenue and carries incoming traffic from the motorway into the city centre.

Municipality outlines vision

Presenting the new creative business identity of Trikoupi on Tuesday, Nicosia mayor Charalambos Prountzos said the capital was entering a new era that is greener, more sustainable and more inclusive.

He said Trikoupi street connects the modern city with the walled town and that the project includes upgrades to public space and infrastructure.

Works and objectives

The redevelopment includes new roads and pavements, underground public utility networks, smart city features, lighting, new public areas, trees, and the restoration of 53 building facades, 16 of them listed, to highlight the area’s architectural heritage.

Prountzos said the works form part of a broader plan to change the image of Nicosia through upgrades to roads, parks, pavements and infrastructure.

The creative business neighbourhood is intended to attract new professionals, creators and businesses, and to gradually promote the historic centre as a student and academic hub.

Next phase of moat restoration

In a press release on Wednesday, the municipality said the restoration of the inner perimeter arch of the moat will enter a new phase on Thursday. As a result, the road from the Constanza bastion to Oxi roundabout will be closed to traffic.
