Polis Chrysochous, Cyprus. Transport Minister Evie Tsolaki announced on Monday that tenders for both phases of the four-lane road linking Paphos and Polis Chrysochous are expected to begin in the first half of 2027. She spoke after meeting all parties involved in the project in Polis.

Plans and next steps

The meeting reviewed updated plans and the steps needed to advance a project that has faced repeated delays over several decades. Tsolaki said efforts to build the road started in 1990, and that work is now under way to avoid running into the problems of that period.

She described the road as a priority and said she hoped it would be finished within the set timeframes. According to her, regular meetings are being held with President Nikos Christodoulides and the public works department so the project can proceed smoothly.

Expropriations and planning

The minister said the expropriation of property has already progressed, and that no further delays are expected on that front. Planning for two additional lanes is also in progress to prevent fresh delays, while the relevant services are coordinating so they can send their views and proposed infrastructure to the ministry as soon as possible.

Procurement process

The terms of the procurement are currently being drafted, Tsolaki said. The tender and the submission of bids will follow, after which the bids will be examined and evaluated, a procedure she described as time-consuming.

“We are trying for everything to be done properly so that we don’t have any mistakes again that would translate into delays,” she said.

Local reaction

Polis mayor Yiotis Papachristofi said the Polis area has been the most affected by the delays. He expressed hope that the project would be advanced in the best possible way.
