Broadcasters reminded to treat parties and candidates equally ahead of May 24 elections

Athens, Greece. Radio and TV broadcasters were reminded on Thursday of their legal obligation to treat all parties and candidates equally and without discrimination ahead of the May 24 parliamentary elections.

Authority circular sets pre-election period

The Radio-Television and Digital Services Authority said in a circular sent to stations that the pre-election period means three months before any elections.

Equal treatment and substantive information

The authority said stations must treat equally and without discrimination the legislative and executive powers, every candidate and every political party, with the aim of providing substantive information to the public.

Requirements for coverage during pre-election periods

While acknowledging journalistic independence and freedom to decide reporting, the authority said that during pre-election periods radio and television organisations have a duty to secure polyphony, objective and spherical information, and equal treatment of parties and candidates.

Avoiding exclusion from public debate

The authority said practices that may lead to the restriction or exclusion of political formations and candidates from the public debate must be avoided.
