Nicosia, Cyprus. Journalist Makarios Drousiotis on Monday appealed for public financial contributions to cover legal and forensic costs, saying he faced “financial annihilation” amid a second criminal investigation.
He said the investigation concerned alleged personal data offences connected with his book Mafia State and described it as vindictive and intended to discredit him as a witness.

In a video posted on social media, Drousiotis said he was standing alone against a system with the “whole state mechanism” at its disposal, including major law firms and powerful individuals with wealth and influence.
He said their aim was “to bring me to my knees financially and exhaust me physically and mentally.”
Drousiotis also referred to what he described as a “plot” and a “cover-up conspiracy” following revelations in Mafia State.
Second investigation
On Saturday, Drousiotis said in a post on X that police had opened a second criminal investigation into alleged personal data offences linked to Mafia State.
The book was published about four years ago, while the investigation was announced two months after the anti-corruption authority delivered its findings on allegations contained in the book.
In Monday’s video, Drousiotis said investigators were “harassing” all those involved in the book’s publication, including its editor, designer and printers.
Sandy case
Drousiotis is already facing criminal proceedings in the separate Sandy case, in which he and a woman publicly known as Sandy have been served with indictments involving around 101 counts.
The case concerns allegations that fabricated messages and false claims were used to accuse public figures of serious crimes.
Referring to that case, Drousiotis said the Law Office was sending him to trial on 80 charges of knowingly and maliciously publishing fake news.
“Following the tolerance after my first prosecution, they have become bolder and now don’t even keep up pretences,” Drousiotis said.
