New law sets limits for invasion of privacy

The Parliament of Cyprus adopted a new law, which regulates personal privacy issues of government officials.

New provisions adopted earlier by the Parliament and Supreme Court of Cyprus were declared being in breach with the constitution. Earlier, the law allowed monitoring personal live of officials and their families, as well as they were obliged to publish information on their bank accounts. All the private information had to be available to the public. According to the press secretary, the concept of transparency was perceived too literally.

According to Eltoma Global, the Supreme Court decided to introduce amendments, which will allow protecting the privacy of government officials and their families.

“Spouses and underage children are not considered to be politically active individuals and should not be the subject to public control,” the court stated.
