Nicosia, Cyprus. Hot and mostly sunny weather is expected across Cyprus on Thursday, with temperatures reaching 40C inland and isolated showers or thunderstorms forecast mainly in mountainous areas.

The meteorological service has issued a yellow warning for high temperatures, valid from 2pm until 4.30pm.

Clouds forming locally around noon are expected to bring isolated showers and thunderstorms, mainly over the mountains.

Maximum temperatures will reach 40C inland, 31C on the west and southwest coast, 35C on other coasts and 29C in the highest mountains.

Winds will initially be variable and gentle at 3 Beaufort, becoming southwest to northwest moderate to fresh, at 4 to 5 Beaufort, during the afternoon. Seas will be moderate.

Thursday night will be mainly clear, with low clouds expected along the coast.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday are expected to be mainly clear. Local cloud development in the afternoons may bring isolated showers and thunderstorms, possibly with hail, inland and over the mountains.

Temperatures are expected to drop slightly on Friday and remain close to seasonal averages over the weekend.
