Larnaca steps up mosquito checks and spraying across district
Larnaca municipal health services have begun additional inspections and spraying to prevent mosquito breeding and monitor disease-carrying species.

Larnaca, Cyprus. Larnaca municipal health services began additional checks and spraying on Friday to address potential mosquito breeding grounds across the district.
The measures focus on prevention, early intervention and systematic surveillance of mosquito species that can transmit diseases not endemic to Cyprus.
Surveillance and prevention
Municipal health inspector Andreas Stergides said the presence of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes was not new. The species can transmit diseases including dengue fever and Zika.
He said an organised daily house-to-house programme had operated for years in cooperation with state health services.
Anti-malaria teams carry out daily surveillance work, with the municipality placing particular emphasis on prevention and early intervention.
Monitoring programme
Special traps have been installed in cooperation with the health ministry to monitor mosquito populations.
Stergides said Larnaca’s airport, port and marina were significant entry points. The traps are part of the national mosquito surveillance programme, and additional units are expected to be installed soon.
Public cooperation
Stergides urged residents to remove stagnant water from basins, flowerpots, old tyres and gutters around their homes.
He also recommended installing window and door screens as an additional protective measure.
