Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus is forecast to record a significant increase in barley yield this year, according to the European Commission Joint Research Centre’s monthly crop monitoring bulletin published on Monday.

The JRC projected a barley yield of 2.28 tonnes per hectare, 30 per cent above the five-year average and 144 per cent higher than in 2025.

Yield forecast

The projected yield compares with an average of 1.76 tonnes per hectare over the past five years and just under one tonne per hectare in 2025.

The JRC said its yield forecasts cover only crops occupying more than 10,000 hectares in each country. As a result, no figures were listed for Cyprus for wheat, maize, potatoes, sunflower and soybean.

European outlook

The bulletin reported worsening prospects for summer crops across much of Europe, where prolonged heatwaves and drought have significantly affected conditions.

Barley cultivation in Cyprus

Barley has been cultivated in Cyprus since at least the Bronze Age, mainly on the fertile Mesaoria plains.

Cereal cultivation now accounts for around a quarter of Cyprus’ arable land, with barley the dominant crop and primarily grown for animal feed.
