Nicosia, Cyprus. Contracts for upgrading the Pentakomo and Koshi integrated waste management facilities are expected to be awarded in 2027 and 2028 respectively, Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis said on Wednesday. The ministry is monitoring timelines and coordinating the parties involved while planning for Cyprus’ longer-term waste management needs.

Facility visits

Senekis visited the facilities at Pentakomo and Koshi, where he was briefed on their operations and challenges, several of which the ministry said had accumulated over time.

He discussed with officials and operators the next steps needed to ensure the facilities continue operating smoothly and are gradually upgraded.

National waste management study

The ministry said final upgrade plans for both facilities will be determined through an ongoing study on the sustainability of Cyprus’ municipal solid waste management infrastructure network.

The study will establish the infrastructure required to complete the national waste management network.

Until it is completed, measures are being taken to meet immediate operational needs. The ministry said the proposed interventions could support the facilities during the transitional period and potentially form part of permanent upgrades, allowing current investments to retain long-term value without pre-empting the study’s conclusions.

Pentakomo and Koshi projects

At Pentakomo, Senekis was briefed on work carried out since December 2023, when the state assumed operation of the facility. More than 180 contracts have since been concluded for operational requirements and interventions involving equipment, health and safety.

Projects intended to address Pentakomo’s immediate operational requirements during the transitional period were also discussed.

At Koshi, the minister reviewed the current situation and projects aimed at ensuring sufficient capacity and uninterrupted operation during the transitional period.
