Nicosia, Cyprus. Parents preparing for the new school year face wide variations in school supply prices, with school bags ranging from €1.89 to nearly €210, according to the Cyprus consumers’ association.

The association advised families to plan purchases carefully, compare prices in shops and online, and avoid advertising-driven spending, particularly on branded products.

Survey findings

The association surveyed prices online and in stores at 10 businesses with outlets in all Cypriot cities. It said overall school supply prices remained broadly at 2025 levels, although some categories recorded small fluctuations.

Some retailers offered lower prices online than in physical stores for the same products, the association said, making comparisons between the two sales channels particularly important.

Price differences

School bags ranged from €1.89 to €209.95, depending on size, design and brand. Pencil cases cost between €0.48 and €45.55, while pencils, pens and markers ranged from €0.20 to €18.99.

Fifty-sheet and 100-sheet notebooks, as well as two-subject spiral notebooks, were priced between €0.32 and €12.99. Filing folders ranged from €0.19 to €8.48.

Price differences were also recorded for school clothing. Jerseys and shirts, including products on offer, cost between €3.99 and €48. Trousers ranged from €12 to €27, while skirts cost between €11.50 and €25.

Advice to families

The association said back-to-school shopping could help parents teach children how to navigate the market and avoid advertising and unnecessary consumption.

It advised families to prepare a list containing only items needed at the start of the school year and to help children distinguish between what they need for school and what they believe they need.

Consumers were also advised to assess product quality and ensure items were appropriate for the child’s age. The association said younger children should be discouraged from buying stationery resembling food or carrying food-like scents for health and safety reasons.
