Novi Sad, Serbia. Parliamentary elections take place across Serbia on Sunday, with a popular student movement aiming to unseat longtime leader Aleksandar Vucic. Corruption and demands for government accountability have been central campaign issues since the deadly Novi Sad station disaster.

Student movement seeks accountability

Students Win grew out of protests following the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024, which left 16 people dead. Its anti-corruption campaign calls for accountability and transparency in public procurement.

Both the Democratic Party and the Kreni Promeni movement have chosen to support Students Win instead of submitting separate electoral lists.

Protesters allege that Vucic and his allies engage in corruption, exercise control over the media and mistreat demonstrators. The authorities reject those accusations.

Vucic campaigns for premiership

Vucic stepped down from the presidency on September 27 and is seeking the premiership. The Aleksandar Vucic – United Serbia electoral list, led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), is promoting economic expansion, increased pay and pensions, spending on infrastructure and political stability.

SNS leader Milos Vucevic has promised economic growth of 4% in 2027.

Alliances offer competing platforms

The pro-Russian Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), a longstanding SNS ally, heads the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) – Ivica Dacic – Factor of Stability coalition. Its partners are Unified Serbia, the Social Democratic Party of Serbia and the Greens of Serbia.

Its campaign emphasises social justice, welfare and workers’ rights, alongside national interests and political stability.

European Serbia, a pro-European opposition alliance headed by Marinika Tepic and Zdravko Ponos, supports deeper European integration, democratic reforms and sanctions on Russia.

The alliance comprises the Party of Freedom and Justice, Serbia Centre, and the Solidarity, Self-Defence and Liberation movement.

Voters choose among 18 lists

The election commission has authorised 18 electoral lists. Parties, coalitions, movements and other groups are eligible to submit lists, each containing a maximum of 250 candidates.

Voters select a single electoral list on election day, not individual candidates.
