Limassol advances CCTV plans for six public spaces
Limassol municipality is assessing CCTV installations at six public locations, consulting the data protection commissioner to ensure legal compliance.

Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol municipality is progressing with plans to install CCTV cameras in six public spaces to combat vandalism, with assessments being carried out in consultation with the data protection commissioner’s office.
Mayor Yiannis Armeftis told the Cyprus News Agency on Friday that the process aims to ensure any installations remain within the law.
Assessments at priority locations
Evaluations have advanced furthest for Gauguin park, Filellinon park and the historic centre of Ayia Fyla.
The assessments for the two parks have so far been positive. Armeftis said cameras would be limited to the immediate perimeter requiring protection.
The historic centre of Ayia Fyla has presented further difficulties because of the number of residents and visitors passing through daily, as well as surrounding homes and restaurants.
Authorities asked the municipality to revise its plans and provide further evidence on the need for the cameras and the fairness of their placement.
In response, the municipality adjusted the precise location of each camera, its field of view and what it would record.
Further reports under preparation
Separate assessment reports are also being prepared for the Molos promenade and an area near Ayia Fyla high school.
Municipal staff are collecting information on previous vandalism incidents and other serious crimes reported in the areas to provide evidence supporting the installations.
The municipality is also finalising technical arrangements, including responsibility for managing stored footage and the level of access to be given to the company operating the system.
