Kyrenia, Cyprus. Thirteen of the 19 injured survivors rescued from the Filo Jet passenger ferry, which capsized off Kyrenia, were discharged from hospital on Tuesday. Authorities continued efforts to locate and recover the vessel’s data recorder as they investigate the deadly sinking.

Hospital discharges

According to Turkish Cypriot media, 10 of the 14 people receiving treatment at a hospital in Nicosia were discharged. Two others were discharged from a university hospital, while one more left a hospital in Kyrenia.

Recovery and investigation

Efforts to recover the vessel’s “black box” are ongoing. The ferry sank to a depth of about 514 metres, complicating data recovery operations.

The captain and seven other people have been placed in custody as part of the investigation into the circumstances of the sinking.

“Prime Minister” Unal Ustel said the vessel capsized after being hit successively by two large waves. He said the captain attempted to right the ferry after the first wave before a second wave struck, causing water to enter the vessel.

Search operation

Turkish-Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman said he hoped to provide an update on Tuesday regarding those still missing, while stressing that the operation would proceed slowly and carefully.

“If we don’t reach the results we want today, that doesn’t mean we’ll give up the effort. Tomorrow, operations will continue with the help of the second ship,” he said.
