Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman are scheduled to meet at the old Nicosia airport on Wednesday morning to continue talks.

Talks agenda

The meeting is part of efforts to make progress on confidence-building measures, the methodology for a future enlarged meeting and the substance of talks.

These issues were requested by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as prerequisites for a new enlarged 5+1 meeting during his visit to the island in late July.

Christodoulides’ remarks

Speaking to Turkish Cypriot media on Tuesday, Christodoulides said he believed the two leaders could “write history” together.

He said the Greek Cypriot side did “not have a Plan B” and that “the only possible solution is the reunification of Cyprus”. He added that the current status quo does not allow the country to fully utilise its potential.

UN envoy

The United Nations announced on Tuesday that Guterres’ personal envoy for the Cyprus problem, Maria Angela Holguin, would brief the Secretary-General by phone on her work.

Holguin cancelled planned visits to Cyprus and New York for health reasons.

Previous postponement

The meeting had initially been scheduled for September 2 but was postponed following the Kyrenia ferry disaster.
