146 animals die in farm fire near Koutsoventis

Koutsoventis, Cyprus. A total of 146 animals died in a fire that broke out at a farm near the Kyrenia district village of Koutsoventis, Turkish Cypriot police said. Two people were taken to hospital after inhaling smoke.


Fire damage

The fire reportedly started at 3.45pm on Wednesday and destroyed a milking machine, generator, welding machine and other farming equipment at the first farm.

It also destroyed 100 square hay bales, 13 rolled hay bales, animal feed, 10 solar panels and a motorcycle inside the barn where the fire began.

Animal losses

Thirty-two small livestock animals, including sheep, rams, lambs and kids, died at the first farm.

The fire later spread to another farm, where 30 small livestock animals, including goats, sheep and lambs, died, along with 50 chickens, four turkeys and 30 chicks.

Second farm affected

At the second farm, the fire destroyed 400 square hay bales, five rolled hay bales, four bags of barley, the roof of an outhouse, nine fruit trees and a plastic water tank.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control. Police said their investigation is ongoing.
