Tokyo, Japan. A preliminary magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday afternoon, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The agency issued a tsunami warning of up to 3 metres for Iwate, Aomori and Hokkaido prefectures.
Epicentre and depth
The JMA said the tremor’s epicentre was in the Pacific Ocean and its depth was 10 km.
Seismic intensity
The quake measured an “upper 5” on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, a level described as strong enough to make it difficult for people to move around. The agency said that in many cases, unreinforced concrete-block walls collapse.
How are authorities and residents in the affected prefectures responding to the tsunami warning?
