Valletta, Malta. Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela said on Sunday that his Labour Party had won a record-breaking fourth successive general election victory. He said the result gave the party a strong mandate.
Election result
Journalists following the vote count said Labour had secured a comfortable parliamentary majority, although it appeared narrower than in 2022, when the party won 55% of all ballots cast.
Opposition reaction
Charles Bonello, general secretary of the opposition Nationalist Party, conceded the election in remarks to TVM, the state broadcaster. He said his party had nevertheless managed to reduce Labour’s majority.
Turnout and campaign
The election was held on Saturday and saw turnout of 87.4%, slightly higher than in the last general election in 2022.
Labour campaigned on the strength of a strong economy, experience and credibility in government. The Nationalist Party argued that people’s quality of life had deteriorated despite economic growth in the European Union’s smallest nation.
Next steps
Abela, who succeeded Joseph Muscat as Labour leader in 2020, is due to be sworn in on Monday morning.
