AG Leventis Gallery to screen documentary “Armenians: The Hidden Grandmothers” on March 18

Nicosia, Cyprus. A.G. Leventis Gallery will screen the documentary Armenians: The Hidden Grandmothers on March 18 as part of its Wednesday lecture series. The event begins at 7.30pm and entry is free, with limited availability.

Documentary focus

Directed by Alexandra Routhiau Mikaélian, the 52-minute film follows a French woman of Armenian descent who promised her grandfather she would find family members in Turkey, starting from a first name, Sahimé, the sister he never met. The film traces her journey as she searches for living relatives and explores what it describes as a deeply rooted taboo in Turkish society.

Stories of “hidden Armenians”

The documentary centres on the experiences of Armenians and Turks described as “hidden Armenians” or “the remnants of the sword,” descendants of women and children converted and forcibly integrated into the Turkish population during the Armenian Genocide. It presents accounts of women victims referred to as “Armenian grandmothers,” whose stories were passed on in whispers.

About the director

Mikaélian is a French writer, director and producer of Armenian descent. After ten years as a journalist for French national television channels, she attended La Fémis school and began creating and producing her own documentaries, focusing on the memory of the Armenian diaspora and the intersection of family stories and universal History.

Event details

The documentary will be screened in French with English subtitles and the event is open to audiences from all backgrounds. The screening will take place at A.G. Leventis Gallery in Nicosia, with free entrance and limited availability. Contact details provided are Tel: 22-668838 and [email protected].
