Agriculture ministry says Akamas park reorganisation aims to ensure safety and fire protection

Nicosia, Cyprus. The agriculture ministry said on Tuesday that the Akamas national forest park is undergoing a full operational reorganisation aimed at ensuring public safety and fire protection while taking environmental considerations into account.

Ministry response to criticism

The ministry, commenting on Monday’s press reports, said it remained focused on resolving all pending issues related to the park’s management while protecting the environment and ecosystem and ensuring public safety and fire protection.

Environmental organisations intensified criticism on Monday over the management of the Akamas peninsula, accusing the forestry department and the agriculture ministry of sustained inaction and continued breaches of legally binding environmental conditions.

The ministry rejected claims of inaction, saying management is taking place in a complex and demanding context in which the state must address multiple, and in some cases conflicting, needs.

Priorities and legal framework

The ministry said actions by relevant services and departments are focused on what it described as essential priorities: protection of the natural environment, public safety, fire protection, and ensuring the ability to intervene immediately and effectively in emergencies, within their competences and in accordance with legal procedures.

Road interventions

Regarding the Aphodite’s Baths-Fontana Amorosa road, the ministry said any interventions take into account the area’s environmental character and risks.

It said works were not intended as a general upgrade but were strictly limited to what it described as absolutely necessary to safeguard public safety, safe traffic, access for emergency vehicles, and effective fire protection.

Meetings with stakeholders

The ministry said it acknowledged and appreciated the role of environmental organisations in the public debate and had invited them to a meeting to exchange views.

It added that a meeting has also been scheduled with local authorities.

What do you think should be the main priority in managing the Akamas national forest park?
