Nicosia, Cyprus. Opposition party Akel on Thursday condemned the holding of a National Guard military exercise in the Akamas area on the same day, citing environmental risks and calling for the decision to be revoked.
Akel raises concerns over protected status
Akel described Akamas as one of Cyprus’ most important natural heritage areas, integrated into a nature protection zone with unique biodiversity, sensitive ecosystems and significant environmental value. The party said conducting military exercises in the area posed serious risks to its environment and wildlife.
Objections to military presence in the area
Akel said the presence of military vehicles, helicopters and military units, even for training, was not consistent with the character and protection status of the area. It accused the government of neglecting the protection of the region and said Akamas needed to remain a strictly protected area.
Exercise details
The National Guard exercise was scheduled to take place between 8am and 5pm and was to include helicopters, military vehicles and infantry units.
