Akel leader Stefanos Stefanou files candidacy for parliamentary elections in Nicosia district

Nicosia, Cyprus. Akel leader Stefanos Stefanou on Wednesday filed his candidacy for the forthcoming parliamentary elections, heading his party’s ballot in the Nicosia district. He said the elections come amid challenges and that Akel aims for a strong presence in parliament.


Candidacy filing and campaign message

Stefanou said the parliamentary elections are taking place at a time when Cyprus is facing many problems and challenges, adding that society needs to be protected and supported in practice. He described Akel as a guarantee and support for society, saying this has been proven throughout the party’s history.

He said Akel fights for society and the individual who is facing difficulties and struggling. Stefanou added that a strong force is needed in parliament and said that force is Akel, stating he is convinced the party will achieve the goal of having a strong presence in parliament.

Final parliamentary election under party regulations

Stefanou, 61, who was born in the Nicosia district village of Yerolakkos, said that under the party’s internal regulations this will be the last parliamentary election in which he stands. He said the party’s candidate list combines the new generation with knowledge, and said the party is certain it will succeed for society and for Cyprus.

Nicosia district representation

A total of 19 of the 56 MPs elected will be from the Nicosia district.
